The debates to be celebrated, constituted a struggle between giants, they covered the state, beginning at Ottawa on August 21, 1858 and ending at Alton on October the fifteenth.

Old timers tell, of things they saw here on August 21, 1858.
They were all here fifty years ago, many living people heard original debate, many have come today, to attend the celebration of the historic event which they attended half a century ago.
Was an ox roasted or was no ox roasted, on the day of the original debate when held here, was there a barbecue?
