Edition Notes

Holograph, signed.

Edward Atkinson suggests that William Lloyd Garrison run for Charles Sumner's seat in the United States Senate.

On page 2-3 of this manuscript William Lloyd Garrison replies to Edward Atkinson on March 28, 1874. Garrison says that it is out of the question that he should be chosen by the Massachusetts Legislature as a successor to Charles Sumner in the United States Senate. Garrison hopes that Nathaniel Prentiss Banks will not be chosen to fill the vacancy because of his advocacy of Millard Fillmore's resolutions.
