Miss Paul came to take a drawing lesson from Caroline Weston. John Greenleaf Whittier was at Mrs. Maria Weston Chapman's, and "seemed to think that the cause was going ahead famously." Maria offered to pay for a few Anne's visits to the riding school, but Anne hopes through her own wits to get enough money to pay for them. She heard today of Henry Egbert Benson's death and describes his last moments. "Mrs. William Lloyd Garrison is in great trouble as anyone would suppose." Maria had a very civil letter from Daniel Webster ackowledging the receipt of her petitions. She tells Deborah to ask Charlotte Taber to write a few lines to Webster and "send [them] on to me with the petition. I want her to write on account of thees & thous..." The Chapmans [Henry Grafton Chapman] made a present of $100 to Garrison.
