Correspondence, diaries, family papers, speeches and writings, translations, production scripts, programs and playbills, press clippings, appointment books, and biographical material documenting Le Gallienne's theatrical career from 1914 to 1984. Includes material relating to plays in which she appeared or directed or produced; the Civic Repertory Theatre, an acting company she founded in New York, N.Y., in 1926 to produce classic plays at popular prices; her work in other repertory companies on stage and in films and television; her admiration for actresses Sarah Bernhardt and Eleonara Duse; and her English translations of plays by Anton Chekov and Henrik Ibsen and stories by Hans Christian Andersen and Carl Ewald.

Also includes papers of her parents, Danish journalist Julie Nørregaard Le Gallienne and British poet and novelist Richard Le Gallienne. Other persons represented include Marion Gunnar Evenson, Josephine Hutchinson, Nazimova, and Margaret Webster.
