The Port of Churchill is North America's only Arctic industrial port. The route used to connect to global markets is only available 4 months out of the year. This study investigates temporal and spatial sea ice trends through the Hudson Strait and the Hudson Bay using 144 polygon grid cells. The analysis focused on ice retreat and formation date, as well as ice-free and ice-covered season length from 1971 to 2004. The temporal component observed no significant consistency in sea ice timing. However, a season's length was observed to be a more important factor than surface air temperature in determining the ice trends of the following year. The spatial component observed similar sea ice timing and seasonal length for grid cells located in the Western Hudson Bay sub-region. All other sub-regions did not show any consistency. This regional climate memory effect has potential for improving sea ice forecasts.
