The first English edition, tr. from the original French ms., appeared 1817. The first French edition, from a later ms., revised and much altered by the author, was published 1825, with title, "Moeurs, institutions et cérémonies des peuples de l'Inde." An English translation of this later enlarged ms. was published 1899, with title, "Hindu manners, customs and ceremonies." cf. Editor's pref. in 1899, English ed.
