When Dr Ian Jordan fell in love with her, it seemed to Valborg Maitland that the unhappiness of her past was gone for ever. Then one foolish escapade robbed her of everything. Alone and penniless she had to face up to life away from her country. Then, a deeper tragedy than her own offered a chance for her to rehabilitate herself, and her happiness was complete when Ian asked her to marry him. But even then the past had not finally surrendered its blighting influence on their two lives. Lasting happiness was to come, but not easily.
