"The term "fibronectin" was first used about a quarter of a century ago (Kuusela et al., 1976; Keski-Oja et al., 1976) to refer to an extracellular protein that had previously been known by many different names (cell surface protein, fibroblast surface antigen, LETS protein, galactoprotein a, Z protein) and that was recognized even at that time to play a major role in the adhesion of many different cells to extracellular matrices (Hynes, 1990)."
