"As early as 1923, Charles Seeger published an article in which he lamented the peripheral status and low standards of music as generally taught in U.S. universities and in which he argued eloquently for the adoption in this country of the term "musicology" to comprehend and replace such clumsy phrases as "'music history, music aesthetics, etc.'" (1923:98)."
