Signed "Verus". Don Luis de Onis was appointed minister to the United States in 1809 by the Spanish then in control of the junta government, but he was not received by President Madison till 1815, after the restoration of Ferdinand VII. He had remained meanwhile in the United States, rendering his country such service as he could, including the publication of certain pamphlets over the signature "Verus". cf.
