Complete title: "Life with Alice - 40 Years of Elephant Adventures," by Dick Richards, Keeper of Elephant House, The Bronx Zoo, New York. Cloth hardcover, light green. Copyright 1944. 67 pages text plus 12 pages black and white photographs. 6 1/4" x 9 1/4" x 7/16". Life With Alice begins with Dick Richard's meeting Alice in 1905 at the old Hippodrome in New York City. He had worked for Ringling Brothers Circus, Wild Bill's Circus, and McCaddon's Great International Shows, the last of which went broke in France.
In 1907 the New York Zoological Society purchased Alice from the Hippodrome, and shortly after the sale Dick, through rather comical (to the reader) circumstances, started working for the zoo. Thus began his career with Alice until her passing in August of 1943. As of the writing of the book, Dick was still at the zoo.
