Following the fierce attempts of the Wayne family to keep their home together (‘The Lark Shall Sing’) Wood Mount has been divided into flats. The undesirable characters that had previously infested it have gone; all seems peaceful once more.
But the arrival of an American playwright, Cliff Hermnn, soon causes havoc in the village, for he seems to be at the bottom of the mystery concerning the unknown son of wealthy Miss Dryden-Smith, recently deceased, and he also falls in love with Nicholas’s girl-friend.
