O romance Max e os Felinos, de Moacyr Scliar, narra a história de Max Schmidt, um alemão que, após ter um caso com uma mulher casada com um nazista, se vê obrigado a fugir de navio para o Brasil. Após a embarcação afundar, Max tem que completar sua jornada numa pequena jangada, acompanhado de um jaguar — um dos animais que estavam sendo transportados no barco.

A obra foi apontada como inspiração para o livro "A Vida de Pi", de Yann Martel.
