Vols. 1 and 2 were published in the author's life time, and the greater part of v. 3 was revised by him. "For the arrangement of the fourth volume, the editor [J.B. Nichols] is answerable, but the materials are all derived from Mr. Cradock's mss. except where otherwise acknowledged."--Pref. to v. 4.
