Today, Westminster and Whitehall are thought of in terms of public buildings and monuments, not private houses and domestic interiors, and it is hard to envisage this are as largely covered by the two Royal palaces that, by the time Whitehall was gutted by fire in 1698, rambled from the site of the Houses of Parliament to what is now Trafalgar Square.
