Edition Notes

Refr: Norman 243 Desc: The uncorrected title page with the spelling "exraordinary" Note: Blane was born in Ayrshire and studied arts and medicine at Edinburgh before graduating MD at Glasgow in 1778. As physician to the British Fleet he was instrumental in introducing improvements in living conditions among seamen, and the compulsory use of lemon juice on board ships to prevent scurvy. He also pioneered the use of statistics in clinical medicine, and played an important part in formulating the rules which were the basis of the Quarentine Act. "With Lind he stands predominate in the history of naval medicine" (Garrison & Morton)
