Samuel May, Jr. informs William Lloyd Garrison that the latter's gift of the autibiography of Harriet Martineau, appearing in two volumes, was received at his home the day before, and thanks Garrison and son for sending them. May states that he has been reading the memoirs of Mrs. Chapman to his wife and daughter, and states that he finds her style to be "more simple, less involved" than in days past. May lauds Martineau's work as "an absolute charm", citing its "transparent honesty" and "perfect simplicity". May informs Garrison that the section detailing the "historic meeting of the Female Antislavery Society at Francis Jackson's home" lists the Rev. Samuel May as an attendee when it should list the Rev. Samuel Joseph May as in attendance. May informs Garrison that he encountered "our dear good Wallcut" the prior week, who informed him of Garrison's new health woes. May states that he also met Wendell Phillips, who informed him that Garrison is "a year younger" than supposed, owing to the discovery of "some early record" giving Garrison's year of birth as 1805 rather than 1804.
