Art critic and art historian Leo Steinberg (1920-2011) was born in Moscow of German Jewish parents, and lived in Berlin and London before emigrating to the United States in 1945. He taught at Hunter College, City University of New York, and at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1983, he became the first art historian to receive the Award in Literature from the American Academy and Institute for Arts and Letters.
