Edition Notes
Holograph, signed.
The first page of this letter is mostly concerned with the box sent to the bazaar by the ladies of Leeds, England. Joseph Lupton was sorry to learn what Maria Weston Chapman thinks of Frederick Douglass' prospects "both as to the Bazaar, & more particularly his paper." Joseph Lupton hoped that Frederick Douglass would make the paper, The North Star, succeed, though he felt doubtful about it from the beginning. Joseph Lupton's friend, Mr. Wilson, has in the press an important work called "A Tribute to the Negro." Joseph Lupton is trying the famous waters of Buxton for his rheumatism. Mr. and Mrs. Lupton invite Maria W. Chapman to visit them when she returns to England. Joseph Lupton's cousin, Miss Harriet Lupton, also wants Maria W. Chapman and the Weston sisters to visit her. Joseph Lupton comments on the situation on the continent.
