Edition Notes

Holograph, signed with initials.

William Lloyd Garrison writes to Samuel Joseph May: "I thank you for your criticism upon my criticism, and for your reproof of my censure of Gerrit Smith. It is another proof of your friendship and more to be prized than a personal panegyric." Garrison defends that his comment about Gerrit Smith's appearance at Burritt's Compensation Convention was "descriptive" and "not contemptuous."

The postscript of this letter has been removed and attached to Gerrit Smith's letter to Samuel Joseph May, Sept. 5, 1857, see Call No. Ms.A.1.1 v.5, p.50.

Merrill, Walter M. Letters of William Lloyd Garrison, v.4, no.189.
