Panos Ioannides has recorded an important chapter in Modern Greek letters. He is one of the avant-garde in the field of
prose and playwriting, introducing innovations to literature. He has worked in all literary genres: poetry, prose and playwriting. With his plays Panos Ioannides has contributed to the consolidation of the theatrical art in Cyprus.
His literary works draws its inspiration from the history of the country but is animated at the same time by an ecumenical
and contemporary spirit. !e language he uses, without lyrical adornment, plain and lucid, conveys the inner conflicts of his
heroes by revealing the contradictory aspects of life, the hidden depth of reality and truth. !e pithy style, balanced dialectic of time and place, faultless technique and psychological probing of his heroes are the chief virtues of his writing.
He has been honoured with various distinctions including the State Prize for Prose from the Ministry of Culture, the First
Prize at the 5th International Festival of Play for Television (Sofia 1976), the First Prize of the Society of Playwrights of
Cyprus (1980), the First Prize from the Cyprus !eatre Organization for a One Act Play (1984), the Giorgos Philippou-
Pierides Award for the entirety of his work (2009), and the Award for Excellence in Letters, Arts, and Sciences of the Cyprus
Republic in 2007.

Work Description
You could buy a rough guide and you could look up the history of the island on wikipedia. Gregory and other stories does all that and many more. It's a journey through time and in all honesty, done in a masterful way. Ioannides' short stories not only manage to inform you about the island's turbulent history, the characters he creates are amazingly real and human and more often than not, controversial. My favorite story is about the ancient king Cinyras, the first religious/political leader of the island, and if I am not mistaken, Cinyras mirrors Archibishop Makarios III, a modern religious/political figure of the island. Ioannides' language is deceptively simple but packed with hidden meanings and rich imagery. A true master of prose...

My hand was sweating as I held the pistol. The curve of the trigger was biting against my finger.
Facing me, Gregory trembled.
His whole being was beseeching me, “Don’t!”
Only his mouth did not make a sound. His lips were squeezed tight. If it had been me, I would have screamed, shouted, cursed.
The soldiers were watching...
The day before, during a brief meeting, they had each given their opinions: “It’s tough luck, but it has to be done. We’ve got no choice.”
The order from Headquarters was clear: “As soon as Lieutenant Rafel’s execution is announced, the hostage Gregory is to be shot and his body must be hanged from a telegraph pole in the main street as an exemplary punishment.”
