First edition in English of this pictorial narrative of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, as celebrated by Bishop Fulton J. Sheen. This is the Mass features the photographs of Yousuf Karsh, including a pictorial dust jacket, a glorious color frontispiece, and 30 black-and-white photographic plates in the text. Henri Daniel-Rops describes each step of the liturgy (from I. The Prayers at the foot of the Altar to XXX. In the Glory of the Word: The Last Gospel) and adds a series of prayers for the reader. Karsh photographed Fulton Sheen's celebration of the Mass in the Bishop's own private chapel, with his own grand-nephew serving as altar boy. Bishop Sheen has also provided an Introduction,"The Sacrifice of the Mass," composed of the Offertory, the Consecration, and the Communion. Originally published in France in 1951 as Missa Est: Commentaries et Priéres. Reprints J. B. Montini's 1952 acknowledgement (as Secretary of State) of receipt of Missa Est on behalf of Pope Pius XII. Translated by Alastair Guinan, with his Translator's Annotations gathered as end notes after the text. With extended biographies of Daniel-Rops, Sheen, and Karsh at the rear. Approbations. A splendid copy of this lavish production celebrating the Roman Rite.
