Buck Surratt arrives in Morgantown seeking a peaceful existence only to find himself embroiled in a battle between a sheep rancher and a cattleman. Bill Head, the cattleman, appears to run things and offers Buck the choice of working for him or going to jail for the killing of Head's brother. Surratt rejects the offer and opts to work for Sam Torveen, the sheep rancher. In a final showdown Surratt kills Head and leaves town still looking for a place where he can forget his past.
