Edition Notes

Added engr. fold. t.p.: Mathematicall recreations, or, A collection of sundrie excellent problemes out of ancient & moderne phylosophers.

STC 10558.5

Translation of Récréations mathématiques, part I of which was first published (Pont-à-Mousson, 1624) with title: Récréation mathématique. The dedication was signed: H. van Etten, long thought to be a pseudonym of Jean Leurochon, but now believed to have been a real person. Authorship of parts 2 & 3 is unknown. Attribution of the translation to William Oughtred is now questioned. Cf. Trevor H. Hall, Mathematicall recreations: an exercise in seventeenth-century bibliography (Leeds, 1969).

Pages 163-174, 239-240 and 285-286 wanting. Title page and "To the reader" from A thousand notable things, on various subjects ... (London: Printed for G. and T. Wilkie ..., 1785) bound in at end.
