Translation of Récréations mathématiques, part I of which was first published (Pont-à-Mousson, 1624) with title: Récréation mathématique. The dedication was signed: H. van Etten, long thought to be a pseudonym of Jean Leurochon, but now believed to have been a real person. Authorship of parts 2 & 3 is unknown. Attribution of the translation to William Oughtred is now questioned. Cf. Trevor H. Hall, Mathematicall recreations: an exercise in seventeenth-century bibliography (Leeds, 1969).
