En Afrique de l'ouest, les traditions orales sont transmises par une caste qui en est dépositaire : celle des Griots. Le Griot est celui qui "chante" la cosmogonie, les histoires et légendes. A la fois transmetteur des traditions, véritable bibliothèque vivante, il accompagne aussi certaines thérapies comme le "N'Doëp". A la fois troubadour, humoriste, chansonnier, fou du roi, il investit aujourd'hui le cinéma africain et la musique mandingue en particulier, c'est là que le public découvre son existence.
