Colour plates were produced using the "Baxter Process" of colour wood engraving. Cf. Docker, Alfred. The colour prints of William Dickes.
One wood-engraved illustration within the text is signed: "J. W. Whimper" and another: "J. W. Whymper".
Colour plates and illustrations within the text are the same as those used in an 1852 edition of this title published by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. See McLean D 0907.

MASS copy: Bound in blue cord-grain cloth blocked in blind with the spine blocked in gold. Blocking in blind on covers is in the same design as McLean D 0907 and McLean D 0909. With pale yellow endpapers. With binder's ticket: "S. Curtis. Binder.". With ownership inscription: " W. L. Barclay". With ink stamp: "J. A. J. Barclay". Lacking plates [10] and [13].
