About learning to write: The best and happiest way to learn would be to sit -- as so many generations of young writers have done -- at a cafe table in Paris listening to Stendhal, or Turgenev, or Joyce, or Hemingway debating technique with their friends. Every fiction writer who is at all good cares deeply about this matter. Every great writer knows something about it that no one else knows. But, since that cafe table isn't just down the street for most people, the nearest useful thing would be to have a book that brings together many writers' ideas about their craft, along with examples of how they solved, didn't quite solve, or failed to solve some of the technical problems of telling a story. We have tried to do that here.
