A West German schoolboy named Frank Brandenburg just happened to watch the American miniseries "Holocaust", and the story it told about his country surprised and shocked him. He set out to find the truth for himself by contacting and interviewing surviving, unabashed National Socialists. As time passed, some of these men came uncomfortably close to being the boy's "friends" as he spent time with these men, talking about their memories of the Third Reich. He tried always to seek the truth and to remain impartial, and when he felt that the men were remembering what they chose to remember and not necessarily what happened, Frank tried different approaches. He funded his endeavors by selling autographs and other Nazi memorabilia he received from the men he interviewed. His friends did not understand his quest from the beginning. It began as a boy's yearning for truth in his study of the history of his country. It ended as an important project, for the old Nazis were dying out. As Frank states, "My hope is that is has been worth while. I am, after all, a German, and I love my country."
