Die Hauptcharaktere sind der Kaufmann und Schriftsteller Beaumarchais und Benjamin Franklin als Abgesandter des amerikanischen Kongresses. Als weitere historische Persönlichkeiten treten König Ludwig XVI., Marie Antoinette und der französische Aufklärer Voltaire auf.
