"An examination of the series of inquisitorial trials preserved in the Modena State Archives, and particularly the first group, ranging in date from the end of the fifteenth century to, roughly, the first half of the sixteenth, reveals an increase of trials and denunciations for witchcraft, magic, and superstition in the triennium 1518-20."
