Edition Notes
A series of articles written by the author in the form of 12 letters pseudonymously signed "Nearchus" and published in the United States nautical magazine, v. 1, no. 3 (May 1, 1845)-v. 3, no. 3 (May 1, 1846), under title: Historical sketch of navigation and naval architecture. Five additional installments appeared in Hunt's merchants' magazine, Nov. 1846-Mar. 1847. The author has detached copies of these 17 pieces from the 2 periodicals and bound them for presentation to his daughter, Mrs. Julia M. Dearborn Clapp, on Feb. 23, 1848. Prefixed to the printed pages is a ms. t.p., letter of presentation, and table of contents. Included as the 18th piece is an article by the same author, signed "Massasoit" and entitled "The survey of the coast of the United States," detached from the Jan. 1846 issue of the United States nautical magazine.
