Originally published in 1963 under title: Podkayne of Mars, her life and times. NOTE: This 1993 hardback Edition (and ebook) from Baen finishes with Heinlein's unpublished Postlude ending of the story, beginning on page 169. At the original publication in 1963, the editor at Putnam did not approve Heinlein's ending, deeming it too grim for young readers, and required him to change it. So the Putnam ending added some more text. The Postlude as first published by Putnam begins on page 177.
Also note that Open Library has an better Baen edition (and ebook for loan), https://openlibrary.org/books/OL15103415M/Podkayne_of_Mars, issued in paperback by Baen in 1995. It includes Jim Baen's thoughts, and essays by the winners of a contest, giving reasons for or against Heinlein's ending.

Work Description
Written for the juvenile mid-20th century sci-fi market, the story focuses on relationships between family members, friends, and enemies. Podkayne, a human girl born on Mars, has the opportunity to travel to Terra with her Uncle and her younger brother. She learns about good and evil, trust and betrayal, and, of course, about herself.

August 15, 2023 | Edited by tkech | fixed my error misidentifying the original, added a note about a better Baen edition available for borrowing on Open Library. The cover shown here mentioning the contest and paperback is swapped/incorrect. The ebook here, which matches this isbn, has a cover says nothing about the paperback or contest. |
August 15, 2023 | Edited by tkech | added note about "alternate" ending provided by Heinlein. It's very important to fans. |
