Edition Notes

"The substance of the following dissertation was delivered by the author in the course of his lectures on rhetorick and belles-lettres, in the University of Edinburgh." -- Advertisement.

The poems attributed to Ossian were probably written by James Macpherson, who claimed to have collected and translated them. cf. Oxford companion to English literature.

"Blair encouraged MacPherson to publish the 'Fragments of ancient poetry' in 1760,, and eulogised their merits with more zeal than discretion." -- Dictionary of national biography.
