Saleem I. Abdulrauf

Saleem I. Abdulrauf is a Clinical Professor of Neurosurgery at George Washington University, Washington, D.C., and the Neurosurgeon-in-Chief at the Abdulrauf Institute of Neurosurgery, the first university of neurosurgery that was named after him. He is the Founding Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery at St. Louis University School of Medicine and Director of the Center for Cerebrovascular and Skull Base Surgery at Saint Louis University Hospital. He is the Global President of the Walter E. Dandy Neurosurgical Society.

Abdulrauf received his B.A. in biology from Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri, and he received his M.D. from St. Louis University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Missouri. He completed post-graduate training and a residency in neurosurgery at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, Michigan, and subsequently completed a fellow in Cerebrovascular Neurosurgery at Yale University, where he was on faculty in the Department of Neurosurgery. Abdulrauf completed a fellowship in skull base neurosurgery at the University of Arkansas School of Medicine, Little Rock, Arkansas.

Abdulrauf helped in the development of a high-flow brain bypass technique for treating intracranial aneurysm, now known as the Abdulrauf bypass. This less-invasive technique, which requires a much smaller incision, promotes better blood flow, and reduces recovery time, was a significant advancement in neurosurgery. In collaboration with Scanlan International, Abdulrauf developed the neurosurgical instrument to accommodate the requirements of the Abdulrauf bypass technique.

Abdulrauf has served on the boards of multiple neurosurgical societies, and as a visiting professor to over 100 universities around the world. He is considered the world authority on "Awake" surgery for Brain Aneurysms, Arterio-venous-Malformations (AVMs), and EC-IC Bypass. He is author of the main reference textbook for brain bypass surgery, Cerebral Revascularization. He is also the author of the non-fiction book Three Invaders.
