Urodził się w 1960 roku w Krakowie. Znakomity historyk, sowietolog, znawca stosunków polsko-rosyjskich. W 2002 roku uzyskał stopień doktora habilitowanego, natomiast w 2011 roku tytuł profesora zwyczajnego. Jest kierownikiem Zakładu Historii Europy Wschodniej i Studiów nad Imperiami XIX i XX wieku w Instytucie Historii PAN oraz Zakładu Historii Europy Wschodniej na Uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim. Specjalizuje się w dziejach rosyjskiej myśli politycznej oraz stosunkach polsko-rosyjskich w XIX i XX w. Swoją ogromną wiedzą na ten temat dzielił się na wykładach m.in. na uniwersytetach amerykańskich (Harvard, Columbia, Rice), angielskich (Cambridge, London University), a także m.in. na Uniwersytecie Masaryka w Brnie, Uniwersytecie w Tokio, Uniwersytecie Warszawskim, w Collegium Civitas i Wyższej Szkole Biznesu w Nowym Sączu. Uczestniczył w ponad stu konferencjach naukowych i kongresach m.in. w Sapporo, Kazaniu, Twerze, Moskwie, Paryżu, Londynie, Cambridge, Sztokholmie, Wenecji, Nowym Jorku, Budapeszcie, Rapperswilu i Brnie. W 2015 roku został powołany przez prezydenta Andrzeja Dudę jako członek Narodowej Rady Rozwoju.
Prof. Andrzej Nowak to wybitny publicysta, świetnie posługujący się piórem, ukończył kurs dziennikarstwa międzynarodowego w agencji Reutera w Londynie w 1990 roku. W latach 1991-1994 był redaktorem naczelnym wywodzącego się z podziemnego ruchu wydawniczego czasopisma „Arka”, do 2012 roku był redaktorem naczelnym dwumiesięcznika polityczno-kulturalnego „ARCANA”. Jest laureatem wielu nagród, m.in. Nagrody Rektora UJ za wybitne osiągnięcia naukowe (2009 i 2010), trzykrotny laureat Nagrody KLIO za najlepszą książkę historyczną (w latach: 1995, 1998, 2001), został także uhonorowany Nagrodą im. Jerzego Giedroycia. Za wkład w pracę organizacyjną w Instytucie Historii PAN (2003) został odznaczony Srebrnym Krzyżem Zasługi.
