André Alexis was born in Trinidad and moved to Ottawa, Canada, to be reunited with his parents when he was four years old. He grew up in Ottawa and currently lives in Toronto, Ontario.
His debut novel, Childhood (1997), won the Books in Canada First Novel Award, was a co-winner of the Trillium Award, and was shortlisted for the Giller Prize.
