Bogdan Morfov

Bogdan Morfov's fate did not allow him to reach 60 as well (he was born on January 4, 1940). His unfortunate fate to be sentenced by the so-called People's Court caused suffering and distress which could not be forgotten. During his childhood he was interned in the village of Arbanasi and Veliko Tarnovo. He was not allowed to apply for university admission and he was forced to deal with the inhumane every-day life of the concrete-workers' crews in a labour military service unit. He sought salvation in writing and thanks to his enormous efforts he managed to start writing as a freelancer for the press. His inherited intelligence and his ambition to acquire new knowledge allowed him to achieve a significant reputation as a respected expert in the history of the Bulgarian musical culture. His solid breakthrough was the biography of his relative and famous Bulgarian singer Hristina Morfova, followed by a number of monographs and a collection of articles for the Bulgarian musical past. After 1989, he revealed himself as a passionate journalist, who defended the democratic ideals. He became an Editor-in-Chief of the newspapers "Reforma" [The Reform] in the period 1990-1991 and "Zname" [The Flag] until the Democratic Party left the Union of Democratic Forces. He also collaborated with the newspapers "Democraciya" [The Democracy], "ANTI", "Prelom" [Turning Point], "Bulgarska korona" [The Bulgarian Crown], etc. His opus magnum was the book Our Fathers- The Way They Were, which restored the interrupted by the Marxist scholarship glorious history of the Democratic Party and revealed the fate of its prominent leaders such as Alexander Malinov, Nikola Mushanov, Petko Rosen and a myriad of other honourable Bulgarians. Bogdan Morfov was their worthy follower. May he rest in peace.
