Eugene Wyatte Prunty was born in Humbolt, Tennessee and raised in Athens, Georgia. As a child, he and his two sisters spent their summers on his grandparents' farm in Tennessee. His father was Merle Charles Prunty, a geography professor at the University of Georgia.
In 1969, Prunty received a B.A. degree from the University of the South. After graduating, he served with the U.S. Navy for three years. He then resumed his education and in 1973 he received a M.A. degree, followed by a Ph.D. degree from Louisiana State in 1979. He has since published several volumes of poetry.
