In this book Nietzsche describes and demolishes what he calls "antiquarische Historie" and sets his conception of critical history against it. The use of history ends in the use of oblivion in order to create an open future, something completely new.
The strange thing about this train of thought is, that Nietzsche himself often tends to look back at the golden age of greek philosophy. This paradox could be explained by his admiration of Schopenhauer, using the oblivion to overcome and complete the pessimism of the latter.
