Dune is the first book in the series by Frank Herbert. If follows the life of Paul Atreides, a young aristocrat born to a smaller house in the grand politics of the Dune universe. The Atreides family brokers a deal to trade their home planet Caladan, a fertile but non-political home, for the planet Arrakis. Arrakis is a desert planet but it holds an important key to the political game: Spice. The spice melange which enables the hyperfunctioning navigators of the transportation guild can be found nowhere else in the universe, and enables humans to live longer.
The Atreides family is on a dangerous path as events long in the making are interrupted, machinations by opposing factions churn into motion, and the Atreides family on Arrakis find themselves in the cross hairs. His family was banished to Arrakis, and staying there for several years. Paul vows to get revenge on the Baron, who destroyed his family's legacy.
