Results. Paracentral/Peripheral ratios did not show a significant difference between groups. SLE+/HCQ+ demonstrated significant differences in Rings 1, 2 and 3 with SLE-/HCQ- but not with SLE+/HCQ-. Individual comparisons of the central 19 hexagons showed 1/60 SLE-/HCQ-, 2/7 SLE+/HCQ-, and 4/16 SLE+/HCQ+ subjects demonstrating abnormal mfERG recordings.Purpose. To evaluate multifocal electroretinogram (mfERG) responses from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) taking hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) and SLE patients who have never taken HCQ.Conclusion. HCQ therapy may be associated with paracentral mfERG attenuation. The lack of statistical difference between SLE+/HCQ- and SLE+/HCQ+ must be interpreted cautiously because of the small sample size which results in a loss of statistical power and a possible false negative interpretation.Method. Sixteen SLE patients taking HCQ (SLE+/HCQ+), 7 SLE patients who have never taken HCQ (SLE+/HCQ-), and 60 subjects with healthy eyes (SLE-/HCQ-) were evaluated. The evaluator was masked to SLE treatment.
