"The prisoner is charged with having been accessory to the murder of an officer of police, named Nicolas Batti, serving on duty at the French Opera on the evening of the 14th of January. And he is said to have been guilty of the murder of Batti because he had conspired with Orsini and others to assassinate the Emperor of the French, and that in making that attempt the death of Batti ensured": p. 16.
