This is the story of a small boy who does not know how to lace his shoes. He trips over the laces coming down the stairs, and is sent outside by his mother to lace his shoes as she has previously taught him. He is sitting in the yard trying to remember how to lace his shoes when he spots his cat getting ready to pounce on a baby robin. He saves the robin, and in return the robins mother teaches him how to lace his shoes.

Edition Notes
This Lawson illustrated book is in a format that resembles the Little Golden books except it is perhaps a bit taller and has an illustrated cover design that wraps around the spine. It is bound in thin glossy pictorial boards. The inside of the rear cover has a shoe with lace holes that can have a shoestring threaded through to practice lacing a shoe. The book originally came with a shoelace in the lace holes, although most copies found are missing the lace. It also was issued in a dust jacket.
