As Emerson was one of the greatest seminal minds of the 19th century, there is every reason why his contact with the mind of the Orient should be carefully traced - and particularly by someone who, as in the present instance, has come from this Asian background and had available to him a different kind of acquaintance with it than most American scholars ca have. Certainly, from what one already knows and from the account here given, it cannot be assumed that Emerson's relationship with the Orient was casual.
