At Fault was Kate Chopin's first novel. Unable to find a publisher, she published it at her own expense in 1890, nine years before her The Awakening.
At Fault, like The Awakening, is set in the bayous country of Louisiana and centers on a strong-willed heroine. Therese is "a warm-hearted woman, and a woman of clear mental vision; a combination not found so often together as to make it ordinary." This extraordinary woman attempts to impose order on her world, only to find that she must revise her long held assumptions about responsibility and love.
This edition, based on the original privately-printed version, marks the first paperback appearance of this early work by a major American Author.
