Dr. Young, however, thinks it more probable that it was written by Winthrop, or Johnson, or some other one of those who signed the paper." -- Bibl. note in 1905 edition.
This reprint follows the copy in the Boston Public Library in every particular, except that modern forms of letters have been employed.
"A modell of Christian charity. Written on board the Arrabella, on the Attlantick ocean. By the Honble. John Withrop, esqr. In his passage (with the great company of religious people, of which Christian tribes he was the brave leader and famous governor;) from the island of Great Brittaine to New England in the North America. anno 1630": p. 7-21.
"The original manuscript has disappeared. A contemporary manuscript copy was discovered among the Winthrop papers ... and ... donated to the New York historical society." This reprint "follows the manuscript, except that customary abbreviations have been spelled out, punctuation has been supplied where lack of it obscured the sense, and a few obvious copyist's errors have been corrected."
