A rare and fascinating New Hampshire political historical document of the full recordings of petitions and votes from the Senate of New Hampshire.
The inside page reads JOURNAL of the Honorable Senate of the State of New Hampshire, at their session, Holden at Concord, on the first Wednesday of June 1813. Published by Authority, Concord:Printed by George Hough, For the State, 1813.
The document I have is complete with 113 pages printed on rag paper. Included are speeches from John Taylor Gillman, who was Governor of New Hampshire at the time. Gillman was one of The Minutemen of 1775 and a represented NH in the Continental Congress.
In this document is his recorded speech on June 5th 1813. He discusses the consequences of the war the country is engaged (War of 1812)in he states "Not only the right but the duty of The Representatives of the people to inquire into the caufes which have brough forward a great calamity on our country". (page 25). "We are bound to fupport our fyftem of National Government and the laws....but this no means hinders the right of free inquiry, or the full expreffion of sentiments upon measures of Government". He goes on" for is is well known, that wars have been made by Royal and Imperial Governments merely to gratify the pride of men and for other caufes of little consequence" .
In addition there is a list of petition reports on specific members of the NH Militia including their regimen and batillion information. The petition enter into record their efforts of service acknowledging their dates of swearing in dates and service or death records.
In addition there are records of votes to move the rights of NH peoples suffrage forward, and a petition for a grant for a lottery "to render the Merrimack River navigatable".
There is also a recorded vote "for a committee to take into consideration "An act for the ease and relief of persons imprisoned for debt"
