Also issued as pt. 2 of "A practical treatise on painting"; in collective issues from 1837, called "Practical hints on painting" and later "A treatise on painting", it forms pt. 3. This collection, over time, consisted of various separately printed editions of the component works, bound together.

Illustrations engraved by Burnet after Rembrandt, Van Dyck ("Vandyke"), Metsu ("Metzu"), Titian, G. Dou ("Dow"), Correggio ("Corregio"), P. Nolpe, Cuyp, P. Potter, A. van de Velde ("Vandivelde"), Claude, I. Ostade ("J. Ostade"), Gijsbert de Hondecoeter ("Hondekooter"), Wouverman ("Wouvermans"), Teniers, and Frans Hals ("Frank Hals").
