It is about the daily lives of the people of Leningrad (Saint Petersburg) and the tremendous hardships they faced during the Nazi siege of the city (1941–1944). During the 900-day period from September 1941 to January 1944, supplies and food were only delivered when the surface of Lake "Ladoga" was frozen enough to transport trucks and a temporary railway. The siege of Leningrad claimed the lives of 800,000 of the city's inhabitants, mainly through cold and hunger. That is fascinating to read about.
