The letter proper (p. [1]) begins with thanks to the unnamed recipient for his account of William Lodge (the engraver). On May 17, 1723, Thoresby had promised to furnish Vertue such an account; cf. The diary of Ralph Thoresby. 1830. v. 2, p. 378.
